With Youth Day approaching, President Hu Jintao, extended holiday greetings to teachers and students of China Agricultural University in a reply letter, encouraging them to contribute to China’s modernization drive.

A year ago, President Hu Jintao visited China Agricultural University and celebrated Youth Day with the teachers and students. During a discussion, he expressed his expectations for the young students and young Chinese. Recently, students and teachers of China Agricultural University wrote to President Hu to report on their progress during the past year.

In the reply letter, President Hu told the teachers and students that he had learned about the progress made by China Agricultural University in serving agriculture, farmers and rural areas and in teaching, research and school management. He said that the students had worked hard to make progress in their school work, moral character and abilities. President Hu further noted that many of the students had volunteered to work in areas with harsh conditions or at grass roots level, where they won praise for their outstanding performance. The President expressed how pleased he was at their progress.

President Hu pointed out that the issues of agriculture, farmers and rural areas are the top priorities of the Chinese Government and that agricultural modernization is a vital element in the country's overall plan to realize modernization. While acknowledging that the task places huge responsibilities upon agricultural colleges and universities, he assured students and teachers alike that at the same time it offers a platform for agricultural majors to display their talents. Further more, the President hopes that China Agricultural University would continue to uphold the university motto of “solving the many difficulties of people’s livelihood, cultivating the many talents under heaven,” strive to improve teaching and research, and to cultivate outstanding talents so as to make even greater contribution to the country’s agricultural modernization.  He also wishes that students at China Agricultural University would develop lofty ambitions and master the necessary skills so as to live a meaningful life devoted to serving agriculture, farmers and rural areas.
